Rabies is a deadly disease which can be prevented through dog vaccination, the critical factor for effectiveness of dog vaccination is the level of coverage. Thus the rabies to be effectively controlled, appropriate advertising need to be used to reach all communities, a variety of methods have been used to advertise vaccination campaigns. Common methods include meetings with community leaders and in schools, radio broadcasts, posters, announcements using loud speakers and informal channels of communication. However achieving high vaccination coverage remains a barrier and some communities, such as those living far from main roads, are missed. Mass SMS may have a greater reach, particularly in remote communities. However developing effective message content for social and cultural conditions of the catchment area (for specific mobile towers) will be key to their success and the practicalities, while the costs and impacts of such methods needs investigation. The projects aims at using mass SMS advertisement to increase participation of dog owner’s during vaccinations campaigns. I will use interviews to test message contents that can easily appeal to different communities’ barriers and reasons for participations during vaccination campaign. And I will collect baseline data on coverage barriers and reasons for participation during vaccination campaign. And I will collect baseline data on coverage achieved in villages within and beyond catchment areas of identified mobile towers for mass SMS advertising.
